Sher & Blackwell - The living marine resources practice area of Sher & Blackwell is part of the diverse government relations section of the firm. This practice group has extensive experience in representing fishermen and fish processors, seafood pagelabel_practiceareas_marcom_cap.gif (3603 bytes)importers and exporters, environmental and non-government organizations, aquariums and marine research facilities before Congress and the Executive Branch.

The diversity and expertise of this practice group is reflected in the professional experiences of Jeffrey Pike and Earl Comstock, the firm's principals in this area. Both Mr. Pike and Mr. Comstock spent many years working for the U.S. Congress and were heavily involved in writing legislation ranging from marine mammal and whale protection, fisheries management, oil spill pollution prevention, clean water and wetlands. Both are well known within the Executive Branch for their expertise, have testified before Congress on marine resource issues and both have extensive international experience in dealing with global marine resource issues. Currently Mr. Pike is serving on the Department of Commerce's Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee and as the U.S. Commissioner to the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization.

In serving our clients we have secured federal funding for endangered whale research and marine mammal rehabilitation. Our firm has helped Bering Sea fishermen convince Congress to enact legislation establishing fishery cooperatives, helped New England fishermen implement a successful fishing vessel buyback program, developed marketing programs for seafood exporters, and assisted in many large commercial transactions involving seafood companies and vessels. Sher & Blackwell was also part of the winning team that halted plans to develop the world’s largest salt factory in a pristine whale preserve.
