Sher & Blackwell - Animal
welfare is one of Sher & Blackwell's most unique practice areas, and we have been
identified by the National Journal as one of the most experienced firms in
Washington working to improve the welfare and treatment of animals.
In the international arena, Sher & Blackwell has been
involved in protecting endangered and threatened wildlife through the Convention on the
International
Trade of Endangered Species (CITES). We have
also been involved with clients in establishing wildlife parks and preserves and
identifying critical habitat areas for endangered species in foreign countries. At the
United Nations we have worked on behalf of non-government organizations to stop the use of
driftnets and the practice of shark finning. We have also advised clients on the global
moratorium on commercial whaling through the International Whaling Convention (IWC) and
worked to secure international agreements for the protection of dolphins. We have worked
on legislation to stop the use of dog and cat fur in the manufacturing of fur coats.
On Capitol Hill our firm has lobbied and
testified on legislation such as the Endangered Species Act, the Marine
Mammal Protection Act, the Bear Protection Act and the Elephant Protection
Act. We have worked for clients to protect circus elephants, to stop
the poaching of bears, to provide natural sanctuaries for abused and
unwanted performing animals, to stop the illegal trade in endangered
tiger and rhino parts and a variety of other important causes.
