Mr. Jeffrey Pike is a partner in the firm
and serves as Director of Government
Relations managing the firms bipartisan government relations
practice group. In addition to helping clients in the telecommunications,
maritime and transportation fields, Mr. Pike has developed a unique
conservation and animal welfare practice area. In private practice
for over 5 years, Mr. Pike has maintained close relationships with
Republican and Democratic members of Congress as well as Administration
officials. He is currently serving appointments to the Department
of Commerce's Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee and as U.S. Commissioner
to the Norwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization. A former commercial
fisherman from Cape Cod, Mr. Pike is a recognized expert in fisheries
and oceans issues.
Professional Background
During his tenure at Sher & Blackwell, Mr. Pike won
congressional approval of legislation providing more than $55 million in federal loan
guarantees to modernize a shipyard. He has helped a number of clients obtain federal funds
for activities ranging from research on endangered whales, new oil spill prevention
technology and construction funds for public ferry terminals and vessels. He has also been
heavily engaged in developing and negotiating legislative proposals on behalf of firm
clients.
Prior to joining Sher & Blackwell in 1996, Mr. Pike
worked for the U.S. House of Representatives for 16 years. In his last assignment as Chief
of Staff of the House of Representatives Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries, Mr.
Pike was deeply involved in virtually every maritime, fisheries, oceans and environment
bill considered by the House including, the Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, U.S.
Coast Guard, Marine Mammal Protection Act, Merchant Marine Act, Oil Pollution Act, Ocean
Dumping Act, and numerous other laws. Prior to his appointment as Chief of Staff, Mr. Pike
was staff director for the Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife and the Environment and a
professional staff member of the Coast Guard and Oceanography Subcommittees.
Before coming to Washington, D.C. in 1978, Mr. Pike was an
owner and operator of his own commercial fishing vessel out of Chatham, Massachusetts.
